The people of the Western Isles and the issues which matter to them the most are to be at the heart of the ‘Parliament Day’ taking place on Friday 15 March 2013.
In a Scottish Parliament first, members of the Public Petitions Committee will hold a workshop to shine a light on the petitions process and show the people of Stornoway and the Western Isles how they can influence policy and raise the issues that matter to them in Holyrood.
Committee Convener David Stewart MSP said,
“The Scottish Parliament’s petitions system has allowed people from all over Scotland to play their part in shaping Scotland. Issues such as access to medication, free calls to NHS 24 and rural transport concerns have all been raised at the petitions committee and all have had a positive outcome.
“Our Committee is looking forward to forward to meeting groups and individuals from across the Western Isles at this unique event. An event where people can come and learn more about how the petition system works as well as submitting petitions of their own.”
Following the workshop, the Committee will hold a formal Committee meeting during which members will hear evidence on a number of petitions affecting those living and working in the Western Isles as well as on a number of ongoing petitions.
Tickets for the Committee meeting can be booked by contacting the Parliament’s Visitor Services on 0131 348 5200 or [email protected]. The workshop is available on a drop in basis or you can register in advance by contacting Visitor Services.
‘Parliament Day’, which sees the work of the Scottish Parliament come into the heart of communities, will also see a number of local schools involved in learning more about the Parliament as well as the Presiding Officer, Tricia Marwick MSP visiting a number of community projects.
