Commemorative stamps being issued within 24 hours of a British athlete winning a gold medal are to be displayed at the Scottish Parliament.
Following Helen Glover and Heather Stanning’s win in today’s Women’s Pairs rowing final, the Royal Mail will issue the first commemorative stamp by lunchtime tomorrow.
The stamps, which feature pictures of the athletes in action, will go on display at the Scottish Parliament until 1 October. The exhibition will eventually showcase all of the stamps issued to recognise the achievements of Team GB gold-medal winners during the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games.
This is the first time a host country has used action shots for gold-medal stamps and issued them immediately during the Olympic Games.
The gold-medal win makes Helen and Heather the first all-female sports team to appear on a Royal Mail stamp as well as the first British gold medallists in women’s Olympic rowing. Heather Stanning, from Lossiemouth, is also be the first Scot to appear on a gold medal stamp.
