Elaine was first elected to Coatbridge and Chryston in 1999 and re-elected in 2003, 2007 and 2011. She was elected in 2016 from the Central Scotland regional list. Before entering Parliament she trained as a teacher, worked in various local government departments and as a volunteer's manager. She and her husband Vann live in Coatbridge with their son.
