PE01734: Lower the age of hysterectomies

Petitioner: Megan Archibald

Date Lodged: 22 August 2019

Calling on the Scottish Parliament to urge the Scottish Government to urgently review current NHS guidance surrounding the age and status at which women are considered for hysterectomies for chronic medical reasons.

Petition History:

  • How could women with debilitating period pain be better supported in Scotland?
  • Should women have to exhaust all other treatment options before a hysterectomy is considered?
  • Should women have the right to choose a hysterectomy at any age, regardless of whether or not they’ve had a child?

Please consider as no women should suffer unnecessarily

I am 28 year years old and have been told I am unable to have children and have not had a "proper period" since my teens due to starting early. I have been told many times that I am not allowed a hysterectomy because "I may change my mind" when I don't actually have the choice at all! Things should change especially when we women suffer horrendous pain!

Our bodies our choice! It is all about £ & litigation. They don't want to give younger women hysterectomies just incase they decide l8r to sue if they decide they wanted children!

Personally think it should be lowered for any reason, not just medical but medical is definitely a more pressing issue.

I am 38 years old and have had 2 children my family making is over now. After years of horrendous periods and struggling to get pregnant I have asked for a hysterectomy and yet they won't give me one. They know my full history and how much I have suffered and yet it is not even being considered. I think all women have a right to choose what happens to them and if they want this surgery then they should be able to at least speak about it and explore their options without being shut down at the first discussion. Yes it is a life changing procedure and a lot of counselling should be involved to make sure it is the right thing to do especially for younger women but we should be able to decide for ourselves what's best.

Good luck in your fight. I have suffered with Endometriosis for over 20yrs & they palm you off with painkillers. We are the ones to suffer on a daily basis.. keep fighting. xx

I chose to have my hysterectomy when I was twenty seven. The pain was unbearable. Early menopause is manageable. You should be able to choose what you want and need to give you a better quality of life.
