PE01684: Composition of local authority executive committees

People Communities

Petitioner: James Swan on behalf of Whitburn and District Community Council

Date Lodged: 02 April 2018

Calling on the Scottish Parliament to urge the Scottish Government to amend the Local Government (Scotland) Act 2004 to require that the composition of the executive body must reflect the political party membership of those elected.

Do you agree that the single transferrable vote mechanism is likely to lead to fewer overall majority administrations at local authority level and result in fewer decisions made by consensus? Have you experienced this in your local authority area?

Do you agree that this can be addressed and acknowledged by amending the Local Government (Scotland) Act 2004, so that the electorate’s view as expressed through their votes is fairly reflected on the executive bodies?

What do you think would be the benefits of this?

Having witnessed first hand, a gerrymandered council executive where the largest party has the smallest voice...I heartily endorse this petition.
